Mamak Beef with Satay Sauce

I am a sucker for a queue. Not a chaotic mess of a queue like Sunday at The Grounds, or the Food Tourist queue outside of Zumbo. What I am down with is an organised, systematic queue were people wait patiently and in a civilised manner for something that is plainly the best in town. If I’m walking past a queue I’m often tempted to just jump on line to find out what is going on.

Papa Pasticerria in Haberfield on a Saturday morning has a queue out the door for their brilliant coffee, Italian pastries and absolutely legendary Ricotta Cheesecake. I’d queue for that. A steaming bowl of Pho from Pho An in Bankstown on a Sunday morning – I’d queue for that.

And this evening I’m joining the throng of people online at Mamak in waiting for some great value Malaysian roti and satay.

The Chicken Curry ($16) and the Lamb Curry ($16) are very similar in appearance though the lamb has a slightly sweeter flavour to the chicken’s spicy kick. They are however both of equal heat level, which I would say is higher than for the average punter (but right up my street).

The Beef Satay option ($9 for six) a freshly grilled beefy sticks served with a chunky style peanut sauce which is perfect.

The highlight of the evening for me is always the Roti. Though they have the egg version, filled versions and sweet versions, I’m all about the original with the two accompanying sauces and sambal. When the first serving disappears, we order another to help finish off the two curries.

Mamak is not the kind of restaurant where one lingers, particularly when you think of the hungry hordes out front itching for your table. This is an in and out great feed with awesome value which is what keeps people coming back. A trip to n2 Extreme Gelato afterwards, and it makes for a perfect evening.
