Bourke Street Bakery Potts Point

I haven’t bought a loaf of bread from anywhere but Bourke Street Bakery for nearly five years. The crusty, chewy sourdough is so consistently good that it has spoiled me for all other baked goods. The terrific thing about a beautiful loaf of bread is how little you have to do with it. A slick of butter or a scoop of avocado and you’re out.

Though I am a creature of habit on the traditional sourdough, Bourke Street Bakery has a beautiful range of loaves including Soy & Linseed, Fig & Cranberry, Potato & Rosemary and Rye & Bran. In the wintertime the Chorizo & Thyme Roll heated slightly and served with a vegetable and lentil soup is one of the most perfect meals a gal can ask for.

Am also pretty partial to the Chocolate Croissant and the range of amazing muffins Raspberry & Dark Chocolate, Pear & Rhubarb and the Mixed Berry. It should be illegal to classify this sugary cake as a breakfast item, but they’re good.

If you’re stopping in for a bite the selection of pies and sausage rolls are legendary. Sausage rolls are my guilty pleasure and I’ve always felt the absolute best thing that has every happened to the children’s birthday party. Bourke Street Bakery Pork & Fennel Sausage Rolls are as good as it gets and the Beef Brisket, Red Wine & Mushrooms Pie perfectly meets the brief for a rich, tasty, warm lunch.

Bourke Street Bakery’s quiche selection is divine. Today I’m trialling the Spinach, Mushroom & Feta, but am also partial to the Bacon & Gruyere.

There’s a sandwich range that’s a cut about the standard with clever combinations like Braised Pork, Crispy Pancetta, Plum Chutney, Pickled Carrot, Cucumber, Lemon Mayo and Poached Chicken Breast, Roasted Almonds, Pickled Celery and Saffron Mayonnaise. There’s a salad selection for those that come to a bakery and aren’t keen on bread.

Bourke Street Bakery also has what is becoming the hottest sandwich in town, a Reuben Beef sandwich of Corned Wagyu Beef Bialy, Dijonnaise, Sour Cabbage
& Swiss Cheese.

Before I had a clue about preparing my own desserts, I’d often grab one of the Flourless Chocolate Cakes from BSB to round out a dinner party at home. Their selection of tarts also make the prettiest little platter of treats – Passionfruit Meringue, Raspberry & Chocolate, Ginger Brulee and Lemon Curd.

The same menu is available at their original Surry Hills and Alexandria stores and the coffee is a perfect accompaniment.
