The Apollo is one of those restaurants that makes me feel lucky. Lucky that I live in a city that has a restaurant like this up the street from my home. Lucky that I live in a country that has such an incredible mix of cultural dining options on offer. Lucky that there are restaurateurs like Jonathan Barthelmess and Sam Christie who tap into their heritage, wrap it in their years of experience and serve up a meal that makes you glad you stepped out for the night.
I enjoy the dishes that I order at The Apollo so much that I neglect to work my way around the menu, prefering to keep coming back to my favourites. Tonight is no exception.
Starting with the Taramasalata with Pita Bread, a gorgeous little pot of creamy dip that is salty and fishy and almost like a pre-Entrée snackette before you dig in to the serious eatin’.

This is followed up by what is one my absolute favourite dishes in the whole of the city the Pig’s Tail Salad Walnuts, Sorrel, Currents, Pomegranate Farro – this incredible combination of flavours with some pork tumbled in for good measure. Every single time I think this is a great salad that I should really try and replicate at home – never have – which is why it’s a must have for every visit.

Slow Cooked Lamb Lemon Greek Yoghurt was shared together with Roasted Potatos for main. The Apollo must move through serious mountains of lamb as I’ve ordered it every time I’ve visited and it seems to be the case with virtually all of my fellow diners. It’s fall off the bone tender with healthy amounts of fat to navigate around but very flavoursome with the garlicky yoghurt.

There is a range of other things that are on my ‘must try’ list if appetite permits including the Saganaki, the Octopus (a special) when it’s available and the Greek BBQ Chicken. For this evening though, there’s just two of us dining so it’s time to head straight for dessert.
Unlike previous visits, this is the first time I am trying the Ouzo Marinated Pineapple with Watermelon Granita and Vanilla Cream. I loved the refreshing but sweet pineapple and watermelon combination. The vanilla cream is really sweet like it is flavoured with white chocolate. If you don’t feel up to the Honey Doughnuts (which are yum!) then this is a good option so you don’t have to forfeit dessert altogether.

The Apollo is great for date night, a girlie catch-up or you can book the back room for a group booking which will give you the chance to give the menu a full run – highly recommended. The Apollo will leave you feeling delighted, full and feelin’ lucky.
